There are eight modes in the Byzantine Ecclesiastical Music of the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. Each mode is associated with a scale or tuning system. Thus, the eight modes are divided into four Genera or Scales.

1. Diatonic - Modes 1,4,5, and 8

2. Soft Chromatic - Mode 2

3. Hard or (intense) Chromatic - Mode 6

4. Enharmonic - Modes 3 and 7 (Grave)
